ABOUT US
Temesgen Afewerk was born in Addis Ababa from his father Afework G/Giorgis & his mother Hiwot Gebru. His father preferred to call him ‘mesganaw’, to express his gratefulness to have him, whereas he is well known by his friends by the name of ‘Tom’.
Even though his attachment to the church & his father had to take the credit for their input to his poetic expression in his artwork, it was obvious that he had the passion of music since his childhood.



He used to play kirar at the age of 6 without any mentor. He was raised singing the Gospel according to the tradition of Yared in the choir of Medhanialem church. He was only 4 years old when he was playing a role in his first religious play. It was obvious that this kid would be a talented artist in the years to come.
As it was predicted, Temesgen kept his way to his destiny. He had completed the courses of literature & Theatre, offered by the ministry of culture, with great distinction in 1991.The young artist, known for his humorous personality, had presented several comedies as a script writer & actor in Ethiopian Television.
He was well known for his characters that he played in a series of Radio Plays, which were aired in a weekly Saturday entertainment program of Ethiopian Radio, which he played more than three hundred plays, Along with his short stories narrated by him. He also hosted the popular 120 show of ETV during the period of its establishment.
Having the vision of being a full time artist Temesgen had been performing several plays in National Theatre of Ethiopia. With out satisfying the thirst of his soul, without exploiting his imagination fully, without accomplishing his dreams, Temesgen had left the country.
Temesgen has performed in several original, translated and adopted stage plays such as, ‘Sheft’, ‘Ergum Hawariya’, ‘Be Enkilf Libu’, and ‘Eyaya’ in National Theatre, joining the top actors, Tekle desta, Sirak tadese, Jembere Belay, Fekadu T/maryam, Getnet Enyew, Alemu G/ab, Getachew Debalke, which he used to admire them since childhood. ‘Sekeken’, ‘Frash Meda’are some of the original plays that he played in Addis Ababa cultural center. ‘The Twelfth Night’ & ‘Romeo & Juliet’ of Shakespeare, ‘The Dangerous Corner’ of J.B.Pristly & ‘Mandragola’ of mackiavielle were some of the plays that gave him the privilege of playing the main characters. He had also performed in a video film entitled ‘Ye Zemariwa Wef Hilm’.
At the same time, he was playing the main rolls on TV shows such as “ Yechelemebet”, “Menegedegnawa Mushira”, “ Begelagay”, “ Yetegabaw Kijet”.
Working with professionals, he sharpened his talent with experience. Temesgen has a good way of expression. He used each & every channel to bring his inside out. Poetry is one of his ways of expressing his feelings. As a poet, he published a poetry collection entitled ‘Ye Hagere Mist Yelasegn’. In addition to his artistic achievement he gave himself a shot of being a journalist by being the founder & the editor in chief of the weekly artistic newspaper ‘Hollywood’ and also writing articles in many of popular local news papers by the pen name of “tomsey 19th”. He also made interviews with the most famous Hollywood actors, such as Jade Curtis (who played in Batman forever) and Richard Harrison during his journalism duty.
He still has that passionate connection for the music that he loved since his child hood. He wrote best lyrics for the famous singers & he is still doing so. For the last 5 years he has performed several plays through out USA with his fellow artists Debebe Eshetu, Tekle Desta & Alemtsehay Wedajo under Tayitu Entertainment.
As his life is attached to art, he sticks to his goal of making a difference in the profession that he loved. As a member of younger generation he wanted to play his own role in the development of Ethiopian Art.
Having all these in mind, he found a film production company called ‘Holly Land Pictures’, and started filming his own movie to be produced & directed by himself. To broaden his mind, he is a third year student at Strayer University studying computer networking. As a playwright, an actor, a poet, & a journalist, he had traveled a long way of art. But he believes that there is still a long way to go to the holly land of art. And he knows that it is just the beginning, not an end.
